Vocal Range Types Explained

Deep Bass

Below 85 Hz

An exceptionally deep, rare voice. Very few adults speak naturally in this range, which is associated with the lowest male voices. If you land here, your voice sits at the extreme low end of the human speaking spectrum.

Bass

85 – 110 Hz

A low, resonant male voice. Bass voices project depth and authority, and sit well below the average adult male speaking frequency of about 120 Hz. Common among radio hosts and narrators.

Baritone

110 – 140 Hz

The most common male voice type. Baritone sits near the average adult male speaking frequency and spans a deep-to-mid range that projects warmth and reliability.

Tenor

140 – 175 Hz

A higher male voice type, also shared by some lower female voices. Tenor sits above the male average and just below the female average speaking frequency.

Contralto

175 – 210 Hz

The lowest female voice type. Contralto sits at the boundary between male and female speaking ranges, giving it a distinctively rich, low character.

Mezzo-Soprano

210 – 260 Hz

A mid-range female voice, near the average adult female speaking frequency of about 210 Hz. Mezzo-soprano is the most common female vocal range.

Soprano

Above 260 Hz

A higher female voice type. Soprano sits above the average female speaking frequency and represents the highest common speaking range.

Tips for an Accurate Reading

  • 1Find a quiet room. Background fans, traffic, or music can interfere with pitch detection. The cleaner the signal, the more accurate your reading.
  • 2Use a real microphone if you have one. A USB or headset mic placed 10–20 cm from your mouth gives cleaner input than a built-in laptop mic.
  • 3Speak naturally and continuously. Avoid deliberately lowering or raising your pitch — use a normal conversational tone.
  • 4Warm up first. Your voice is noticeably higher right after waking up. Speak for a few minutes before testing for a more representative reading.
  • 5Run it more than once. Hydration, posture, and emotion can shift pitch by 5–15 Hz. Average two or three readings for a more reliable result.
